Writing

Are you a writer who’s fascinated by the idea of giving voice to other species?  Would you like to find imaginative new routes into this creative process, generate fresh ideas or develop a different perspective on an ongoing piece of work?

Are you a mover, a creature performer? Do you think with your body, express through movement and want to explore how physicality can inform and inspire your writing practice?

In this innovative workshop, you’ll explore how diverse ways of moving can inspire and shape your more-than-human writing, playing with sensory awareness, the flexibility of language, and sound. Thanks to the intimate group environment, with the session being open to a limited number of participants, you’ll have the opportunity to share whatever emerges and you’ll receive both nourishing feedback and helpful advice for developing it further.

Prose writers, poets and scriptwriters are all welcome as the techniques with which you’ll be experimenting can be applied to all genres.

Movement

This workshop offers a playful, embodied approach to writing. Through guided movement explorations and creative, creature prompts, you'll discover how the body can unlock language, deepen storytelling and spark fresh ideas for movers and writers alike.

The workshop is appropriate for all writing and moving abilities as Sarah and Susan are both adept at tailoring their teaching to suit all levels, from absolute beginners to the very experienced. Bring your curiosity and a willingness to move and write.

Susan Richardson

Susan Richardson is a writer, performer and educator whose work explores engagement with the more-than-human world. Her fourth collection of poetry, Words the Turtle Taught Me, emerged from her residency with the Marine Conservation Society and was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award.

Her most recent book, Where the Seals Sing (HarperCollins), is a nonfiction blend of memoir and natural history, in which she journeys to the crags and crevices of Britain’s coast and islands, diving deep into the lives of Atlantic grey seals. She has been writer-in-residence with both the British Animal Studies Network, facilitated by the University of Strathclyde, and the global animal welfare initiative, World Animal Day. She also enjoyed a four-year stint as one of the poet-performers on Radio 4’s Saturday Live.

Susan is an acclaimed and inspiring writing tutor, with over twenty years’ experience of devising and facilitating courses and workshops globally. She has run her outdoor Writing the Wild workshops on behalf of many conservation organisations, including WWF, Friends of the Earth, the Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB.

As a lifelong hiker and a decades-long practitioner of both 5Rhythms and yoga, Susan loves exploring how different movement practices inspire and influence the process of writing.
