Character & Creature Embodiment
How do you approach a role? From naturalistic characters for stage or screen, to fully-fledged creatures. What physical choices do you research and consider when building your character?
Are you interested in discovering creature like qualities for a human role, or do you want to work towards finding more human like qualities for your creature role? We shall explore and discuss it all.
Film, TV and Animation Performance and Movement Director Sarah Perry will lead the workshop focusing primarily on the body and movement as a tool for performance and character embodiment.
We will look at things such as how characters walk, behave, gesture, breathe, how to manifest characters’ states, thoughts and feelings through the body and generally how to use our bodies to communicate more effectively.
Please bring with you a character that you are excited to spend the day exploring, the choice is yours from Shakespeare to contemporary, stage or screen, a character with animalistic qualities or something hybrid or other worldly.
Explore
Bring along a character or creature that you would like to explore in more depth and either prepare a memorised 1-minute monologue or if you'd prefer to start from a non-verbal place prepare a short physical scene which captures the essence of your character/creature. Having some sort of foundation of a character to work with, will really allow you to get the most out of the workshop.
Through this workshop, you will gain a richer understanding of how your body, physicality and imagination can be used to its full potential, adding to your strengths as a creative.
This workshop is aimed at actors, physical performers, movement practitioners wanting to work with actors and any creatives wishing to explore character and/or creature performance in more depth.
Please wear comfortable clothes to move in, ideally not too baggy or loose, so as we can see the articulations of the body and the physical & characterful performance choices you are making.
