What the text does not say
3 hours In the Studio
Sunday 26th July 2026 2-5pm (BST)
Sadler's Wells, London
In this three‑hour workshop we will explore the relationship between text and movement. In Tanztheater we rarely use dialogue, at least not in the traditional sense, but many movements are generated from text‑based questions, prompts, and tasks. Tanztheater has therefore always had a strong connection between movement and words.
Recently I have been exploring new ways of merging dance and theatre. Together with Ami Nagano, I am currently preparing a new Tanz & Theatre version of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros. As part of this research, a new approach emerged that refined my understanding of how text and movement can relate to one another.
Dance is a powerful and essential form of expression, but it can sometimes lack context and precision. Theatre, on the other hand, can be very poignant and exact, yet often feels too story‑ or character‑driven, limiting how many facets of a single character can be shown. Our aim with the new Rhino version is to merge the best of both worlds to create an even richer art form.
What the Text Does Not Say explores this relationship and how both worlds can benefit from each other. What movement does not say, words can; and what the text does not say, expressive movement can fill in, creating a layered and resonant form of expression.
In our workshop we will explore tools to translate thoughts into execution and feelings into intention. Seeing movement and text as two sides of the same coin, we will look for that special point where both merge.
Come and join us to discover what that really means.
