ANIMATORS
Sarah Perry helps animators create believable, nuanced and emotionally truthful character performances through observation, behaviour and acting principles.
The most memorable animated performances are often shaped not just by what a character does, but by how they think, feel and behave while doing it. Join us for a practical and engaging workshop designed to help you move beyond animating actions and towards animating behaviour.
Through a blend of observation, acting principles, movement exploration and character analysis, you'll develop a deeper understanding of how thought, intention, attention and physical behaviour contribute to compelling animated performances.
Combining theory with hands-on practice, we will explore both Inside Out approaches (character, psychology, intention and subtext) and Outside In approaches (movement, physicality, rhythm and behaviour) to character development. Together, these tools can help expand your creative vocabulary, broaden your performance choices and support the creation of more believable and engaging characters.
How do you approach animated performance?
What physical and behavioural choices do you consider when developing a character or creature?
How can observation deepen your understanding of character?
How might creature-like qualities inform a human role, or human qualities bring depth and authenticity to a creature performance?
Through practical exercises, discussion, observation tasks and creative exploration, we will investigate the relationship between movement, behaviour, character and performance.

Led by Film, TV and Animation Movement Director and Performance Coach Sarah Perry, this workshop offers a playful and supportive environment in which to explore new approaches to character performance and develop a richer understanding of the expressive possibilities available to animators.
By the end of the workshop, you will leave with practical tools, observation techniques and performance frameworks that can be applied directly to your animation practice, helping you create more believable, nuanced and emotionally truthful characters.
Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in and come ready to explore, experiment and play.
