5Rhythms

5Rhythms is a dynamic improvised movement practice, pioneered by Gabrielle Roth. The practice takes the form of a ‘Wave’ which is music led, ending in Stillness. Much like Shavasana at the end of a vigorous Yoga practice, this Stillness can unlock a deeper level of conscious contemplation and holistic connection with Self.

There are many reasons to embrace a 5Rhythms session as it provides a space for personal creative expression whilst cultivating a deep sense of community. The journey is often cathartic as it sits in the spectrum of Ecstatic dance, where we can energetically cleanse and explore impulses that can ‘open up’ physical range and stimulate dormant aspects of our creative identity. That said, it is also just incredibly joyous to dance in a ‘free’ way, releasing endorphins in the process.

The Wave

In my experience, a 5Rhythms session offers a precious space for the healing power of self- expression which is not necessarily goal oriented. In that way, there is no ego to distract, no pressure to perform. It is simply a pure personal journey that can awaken, stimulate and balance the myriad aspects of ourselves. And if you are so inclined, it provides an opportunity to go deeper and explore some Shadow aspects.

The Wave follows the following structure:

Flow - Fluids / Weight / Water Energy -Shadow aspect: Inertia

Staccato - Impulse / Articulation / Accenting / Beat / Fire Energy - Shadow aspect: Tension

Chaos – Deep Release / Pure Energy / Ecstatic RhythmShadow aspect: Out of Control

Lyrical – Lightness / Expansion in space / Air Energy - Shadow aspect: Spaced out

Stillness – Wholeness / Connection / Awareness / Earth Energy - Shadow aspect: Numbness / Shut down

This will be a highly energetic session and will involve non-stop movement. The space is focussed, and there is no talking throughout the practice. There will be a brief introduction at the start.
